Regular system servicing must take place to comply
To comply with current UK business safety regulation, emergency exit lighting systems will need a regular service agreement in place to ensure thorough testing is complete each year, and so illumination will activate in the event of a power outage.

Two main types of emergency exit lighting systems
- Standby lighting
For businesses where, irrespective of a mains power failure, work must continue and normal activities resume. It isn’t often part of our emergency lighting system installs, isn’t required by law, and is totally dependent on the needs of the business.
- Emergency escape lighting
To provide illumination for the safety of people leaving the premises or to attempt to stop a potentially dangerous work activity before evacuating. It’s a part of the fire safety provision of a building and a requirement of the Fire Safety Order 2005.
Emergency escape lighting is divided into three categories:
- Escape route lighting
To ensure that a means of escape can be effectively identified and safely used by those in the building at the time of a major power outage.
- Open area lighting (also known as anti-panic lighting)
To minimise panic and ensure there’s sufficient illumination allowing those in the building to reach a place where an escape route can be identified.
- High-risk task-area lighting
For the safety of those involved in a potentially dangerous work activity or situation, and so that shut-down procedures, for the safety of the workforce and other people in the building, can be complete.
